I Want A Monkey

Primates are one of the most attractive animals in our animal kingdom. But, they are unpredictable, destructive, and expensive and they need a lot of care and attention. Since marmosets can live for over 17 to 20 years, they truly are a life-time commitment. Before you consider buying a monkey, you have to learn as much as possible about them. Read our info on the site, watch all our videos. Ask us questions.

Before buying a primate you have to be sure that it is legally allowed to keep primates where you live. Some places don't allow keeping certain or any primates, others need a permit. See our info on contact info for your states fish and game department.

Buying your monkey is just a beginning. You'll have to build a large cage even if you buy a small monkey. Don't even think about buying a parrot cage because the holes are too large and monkey can get out. You also need to provide cooling, heating and light. A monkey's diet consists of commercial primate food, fresh food, fresh or cooked vegetables, cereal, boiled or scrambled eggs, grasshoppers, cooked meat, nuts. Cages need to be made with non rust wire. It is called "galvanized after welding wire ". The wire needs to be with small holes only. The perfect size is exactly ΒΌ inch by 1 inch wire. Not bigger. You cannot build the cage with wood like 2 by 4's for example. They are toxic if eaten by the monkeys. See my videos on housing.

Monkeys are very social animals so if you travel a lot for business you MUST find a responsible person that will care for you monkey while you are away.

It is not a good idea at all to let your monkey run around the house. It's best to keep the animal on a short leash on your body instead of running freely. The leash should be a short 3 foot iguana leash that should only be on the animal when it is on your body. Do not tie the monkey to something EVER. Only have the leash for you to have it in your hand. Never ever tie it to anything. It's not a dog.

All monkeys could bite someone. If you get a monkey that is already 5 months old from someone, it is difficult to get one tame at that age. You are best to get one from the age of 3 weeks to 90 days old so they bond with you and your family. If you take your monkey out in public you have to realize that if it bites someone else that it could result in the loss of your monkey and other legal fees. It's best to not let the whole world pet your monkey. Not worth loosing it. They are like cats. You can't be 100 percent sure they won't dislike someone. I have never ever had my tame ones bite anyone, but I have been very careful, and I really tame my babies well. I am an expert.

Make sure you find a vet specialized in primates before you buy your monkey. The first thing you should do after you buy your monkey is going to a primate vet for a checkup. We hear too many times that people can't find a good vet for their monkey when they really need one.

It's time for a reality check. Forget about those movies where you see a monkey perform all kinds of tricks. Unless you are a professional animal trainer you won't be able to teach your monkey a lot. If that is the reason why you want a monkey or if it is just to show-off with them, then you will probably be the first to get rid of them again.

So why would anybody ever want a monkey after knowing all this? Non-human primates are so close related to us that it scares and excites us at the same. It is so incredible to see how they eat like we do, how they can climb, how they like to play hide and seek, how curious they are... Some monkey owners say their monkey is a family member, others talk about their children but they have all one thing in common: they love their monkeys so much that they will do the impossible for them!
